Syzygium ‘Baby Boomer’
Here’s a neat and tidy Lilly Pilly for you.
Baby Boomer is densely packed with leaves but it is compact so doesn’t get out of hand. This one is a favourite for low hedging and container planting with its glossy mid-green leaves that emerge bronze. In Spring it throws up fluffy white flowers which turn into berries for the birds.
Lilly Pilly Baby Boomer is an Australian native that’s hardy against light frosts and drought conditions once established and doesn’t interfere with your drains either.
If you prune this Lilly Pilly back it looks formal and smart but left alone it’s fluffier and free – either way it doesn’t get too big making it an all-around winner with us.
Quick Facts:
-
What to use me for: I’m a great low hedging plant first off, but I enjoy pots and trimming for topiary projects too.
-
I grow to: I’m smaller than other Lilly Pillies only reaching around 1.5m high by 1.5m wide.
-
I am currently: A baby boomer of 10 – 15 cm.
-
Where to place me: I like full sun and part shade.
-
How far to space me: If you want a low growing hedge then look no further. I need 1 metre of space to make a dense hedge.
-
Soil Conditions: Any soil suits me because I’m pretty hardy, but keep my feet out of waterlogged areas. A layer of mulch is really appreciated.
