Erin Farmer is frost tolerant once established and flowers in winter so she’s a great way to add some winter colour to a drab and uninspiring garden.

Camellias are easy to grow. Just pop Erin in the soil or a well-fed tub and she’ll flourish. Cover her roots with ericaceous mulch and feed one a year in autumn for cup-shaped beautiful blooms.

Erin likes winter sun but direct burning summer sun gives her a bad case of sunburn. Choose a partly shady spot for this ice queen, she likes it on the chilly side.

• What to use me for: I’m a gorgeous flowering specimen shrub, great in a stand-alone container, and can be pruned into a screening hedge.
• I grow to: I can reach 2-3m high and 1.5-2.5m wide. 
• Where to place me: Part shade, please.
• How far to space me: I need two metres of room, but if you’d like a tight hedge make it 1 -1.5 metres.
• Soil Conditions: I do really well in rich, organic soils and prefer more acidic conditions. Cheat on your soil by adding acid-based mulch.
