Iris domestica or ‘Leopard Lily’ also known as the Blackberry Lily, is actually part of the Iris family and not a true lily. The striking foliage as flattened fans of sword-shaped, iris-like, light blue-green coloured leaves with deep orange flowers, heavily spotted with red dots (hence the name ‘Leopard Lily’). Flowers appear in early, to mid Summer. They will tolerate light shade, but flower better in full sun. Providing contrasting foliage and growth habit, plus a spectacular display of flowers, maximise the impact of Belamcanda chinensis, by mass planting in your garden.
Flowers give way to pear-shaped seed pods which open (late summer). The pod revealing a blackberry-like seed cluster (hence the additional common name of Blackberry Lily).
