Hydrangea Alba
There’s nothing quite like a white hydrangea for ‘boom’ appeal. They are instantly recognisable with their large puffy flower heads. Chances are you’ve grown up with these plants somewhere along the line.
Hydrangeas are hardy, deciduous shrubs with large, spectacular flower heads in summer. They make excellent cut flowers and really fill up a gap in the flower border.
Hydrangea Alba keeps its big white blooms sat on top of bright green foliage for weeks on end. If you have a dull garden these can brighten the border or soften your decking without making a fuss.
Alba doesn’t change her colours depending on your soil acidity, so you can design an understated and muted colour palette, or create a ‘white’ garden with her as a centrepiece.
Quick facts:
- What to use me for: I’m a great large border filler, I rock a container and make a cut flower display of big puffy marshmallow blooms
-
I grow to: I’ll reach 1.5 – 2 metres in good conditions.
-
Where to place me: I like the sun in the morning and shade in the afternoon. If you’re not sure – give me part shade all day such as under a tree.
-
How far to space me: I need a fair amount of space – a metre apart at least.
-
Soil Conditions: I like rich moist soils. Use fertiliser and mulch if yours is thin.
