Jasminum Sambac – Arabian Jasmine
Is there anything more lovely than Jasmine?
This is Jasminum sambac, also known as Arabian Jasmine. She’s an extremely fragrant, evergreen climber or rambling shrub which can grow 2-3 metres covering fences, pergolas and eye-sore sheds with ease.
The rounded, bright mid-green leaves are adorned with very pretty, single, ivory-white coloured flowers during Summer. This is a seriously glamorous climber.
The flowers are used in herbal teas, perfumes and oils throughout the world because the scent is so delicious.
You will need to give her water in dry spells and provide some shade – the half day sun is best.
Arabian Jasmine will grow directly in the soil and in a container if you water her well. A yearly application of fertiliser will boost the flowers and the scent.
Quick Facts:
-
What to use me for: I cover a wall, fenceline, tree or pergola and clamber across the ground to cover a bank. Pop me in a container and I’ll grow up a trellis too. If you have a seat, grow me nearby so you can appreciate my heady fragrance.
-
I grow to: I’ll reach 2-3 metres but you can prune me back after my flowers have faded.
-
Where to place me: I like full sun and can deal with part shade but please don’t put me in a frost pocket.
-
How far to space me: Give me 1.5 metres of elbow room.
-
Soil Conditions: I’m not too fussy and will grow in most fertile watered soils.
