Laurus Nobilis or “Bay Tree” – sweet bay trees are an essential plant in the chef’s garden. Those aromatic, dark evergreen leaves bring Mediterranean flavours in cooking, perking up the dullest of spag bol.
But tasty food isn’t all bay trees can bring a garden because they look lush and fresh too. Bay leaves are dark green bushy affairs all year round and in spring small, lemon-yellow flowers appear.
Laurus Nobilis will grow happily in a container or in the ground given the right conditions. It will grow naturally as a bushy shrub or hedge but if you prefer a formal look you can clip it into a shape. Lollipop structures are very popular for bay trees.
Try using a fresh leaf in your cooking compared to a dried leaf and experience the taste sensation.
