Shrubs Strelitzia Nicolai Giant ‘White Bird Of Paradise’

Strelitzia Nicolai is known as the Giant White Bird of Paradise or The Massive Show Off but we can’t blame her because she’s got plenty to show off about.

This bush grows the most amazing dark purple and white flower heads in Spring and Summer that are the same shape as her fiery smaller cousin Strelitzia reginae. Nicolai is perfect if you prefer more size and the muted colour palette.

Evergreen leaves grow in large banana-like fan formations and get huge – we’re talking six metres in height. It’s great as a tropical screening plant or a way to hide that unsightly fence-line. Grow her in a pot to soften a pool environment or plant lots for a lush tropical jungle feel.

The Giant White Bird of Paradise is pretty tough withstanding drought, light frost and a bit of neglect. So long as it has free- draining soil and sun on its face it’ll thrive and do you proud.

Quick Facts: 

• What to use me for: I’m large but upright so I can fit into narrower spaces. I look pretty great in pots on the deck or in the border for a tropical feel and my cut flowers last weeks indoors. 

• I grow to: I’ll reach six to eight metres in height as an adult.

• In a pot I grow to: Put me in a pot in your home and I’ll just grow to 2 metres.

• I am currently:  I’ll arrive as a baby measuring 25-30cms and grow with you.

• Where to place me:  Plant me in full sun to part-shade somewhere free-draining.

• How far to space me: I’m perfectly formed and big, big, big, so give me room. I’ll need a lot of height and at least a metre of space around my feet if you’re creating a screen.

• Soil Conditions: I’m not too fussed, but nothing boggy and wet or I’ll rot. 

• My features: If you want a large, lush tropical feel you won’t do better than me. I’m hardy and self-reliant once established with the most amazing purple and white flowers. Does this sound like a dating ad?
